Cheers resounded through the stadium as a squad of toads entered, armed with towering shields and short swords. Against them, a group of three hissing mantises squared up, swinging their arms around like blades. Sure seemed like it, by the wild shouts when the two forces clashed. A soldier was knocked off his feet by the collision, and the bulkiest of the toads, likely a leader swept in to push back a mantis from them, they got up and all circled towards the edge of the arena.
One of the creatures lost a leg and outcried with pain. Dark blue blood splashed on the face of the closest combatant. Shields and appendages collided and the gladiators found themselves shoved up against the wall. The crowd went wild when the animal was minced into a mush of guts and limbs, while the toads charged forward to help their sergeant stand his ground. The huge toad swung himself on its back with his tongue and bashed its skull with his shield. It fell to the ground, dead before it hit the sand.
The fighting force bowed, covered in blue head to toe, earning approval from the crowd, Sasha even stood up to applaud them, and threw a dagger on their level, which was joined by many more from the excited spectators. They collected them, and with victorious growls, left the colosseum. The limbs, guts and bodies were swiped away and another discipline started.
Toads that could easily bench-press a woolly mantis marched in. It was a complicated sport which included wrestling, tossing a heavy metal ball, tongue-tripping the opposing team, and drinking contests to determine what side should get the ball.
Sasha was chewing down some crunchy bugs, even offered her some, but Sunny would more likely puke than stomach anything at all. That was the final point, the referee whistled his lungs out, just after he was buried behind a rock the whole time, not even attempting to make the slightest sound.
He likely feared being crushed into a whistleless pulp, so he scuttered up the slippery-smooth wall, climbed over the shining-sharp inwards-curling protective spikes and sprinted off into the woods, never to be seen again.
Which was weird, because they emerged from two entrances. It being a pub would come off as no surprise. For the third part, the toad in red armor that was chattering with Sasha the whole time leaped down and crashed into the sand, leaving a crater. His name was Crime or something like that? Yeah, Captain Crime, that sounded fair, not to mention it was accurate.
Soft tunes resonated throughout the stadium, when he sung up a poem in a soft voice, untypical for him:. It was music unlike she ever heard before, a raging soul embroided into gentle verses, emphasized by the strings, it was beautiful. Halfway through, when all the pains of surviving faded away, she was yanked back by a rough toad and dragged downwards. In a dark dungeon, of which one entire wall was a massive gate, he grabbed at her cloak.
She unclasped her cloak and handed him her armor and gloves. She was so small, against all of it. Just a drop in the sea, for everybody. She was only a tool to Sasha, everybody other just took pity of her suffering.
They failed to notice her in the process, she was a person! Even if everyone wanted to deny it. A thunder of claps shook the structure, Sunny steadied herself on the table, she felt like fainting, were her legs always this weak?
The bulk that brought her in slapped his palms together, his face grimaced up, he vocalized something that could be interpreted as a cheer. Or as a death threat. So she did, into the center, with everyone watching her, and with the world collapsing on her, she dragged herself there, not even registering who was she up against, until…. Her eyes flashed open, before falling limp again. Why was she even surprised. The one they captured, tortured, and she was going to kill was an old family friend.
She was the one that inspired her to help people, the reason why she felt such compassion. And it all came to this. Them being in a one-sided battle to the death. They used to play together, she would teach her about the world, about people and she always listened with such passion. The nurse was dressed only in torn rags, gashes still shining fresh around her whole body. Blood was dripping off from her mouth and her face was distorted in agony.
Was she looking at her? She was, was it disappointment, surprise, or despair? They both lost that a long time ago. This in front of her was her friend, they used to be happy together, and now. The only thing she could do is end her suffering.
